Echoing the Heartbeat of Koto Gadang Through the Ages
Canang is a quarterly magazine that features a variety of news about the development of Koto Gadang and West Sumatra, stories of its prominent figures, and notes on life events such as births, career promotions, weddings, and deaths of Koto Gadang residents, whether they remain in their hometown or have migrated to various parts of Indonesia and abroad.
The name and logo are inspired by a musical instrument, a small gong that has been known since the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms of the archipelago. At that time, the canang was used as a communication tool to call people together and conduct traditional ceremonies. In the Minangkabau language, the word canang was later absorbed into Bahasa Indonesia, meaning “message,” as seen in the word mencanangkan, which means “to deliver a message.” From this meaning was born the spirit of Canang as a medium of communication, nostalgia, and emotional connection for the people of Koto Gadang wherever they may be.
The first edition of Canang was published in April 1964 at the initiative of a group of students from the Bandung Institute of Technology who longed for their hometown, namely Ruri, Ned A. J., Eddy Mahzar, Sjarkib Albar, Sofyadi Roezin, and Meidi. From the hands of these young people of Koto Gadang grew a publication intended to be a bridge of friendship among migrants and a link to their homeland. Over time, even though its editorial office was based in Jakarta, Canang has remained faithful in maintaining the flow of information and togetherness, ensuring that every piece of news, activity, and idea from the homeland continues to resonate to all corners of the world. Since its first issue, Canang has become a symbol of the continuity of literacy and intellectual traditions that have been deeply rooted in the life of Koto Gadang society for more than a century.
Now, more than six decades later, Canang still consistently appears every three months. In the midst of the digital era, this magazine continues to adapt and expand its reach through online platforms, allowing the Koto Gadang diaspora in various parts of the world to stay connected, follow the latest news, and together maintain the spirit of unity.
With its long historical roots and unyielding spirit, Canang is more than just a bulletin; it is an echo that transcends time, space, and generations, voicing the heartbeat of Koto Gadang through the ages.
